Chapter Thirteen

Charlee

“You’re safe now. I hope you know that,” Snowden tells me. He even plasters on a soft smile, and I can tell he’s trying to reassure me.

I lick my lips, not quite sure what to say. “Thank you.”

“There isn’t a need to thank any of us. All we want is to make sure you know nothin’ is gonna happen to you here.” Mace speaks up, and Snowden nods in agreement. I don’t know much about these guys, but from what I can tell, they’re very kind. Now, I know these two don’t realize what happened, but I’m sure they’ll be updated at some point.

Clearing my throat, I glance around the clubhouse. “Do you mind pointing me in the direction of the bathroom?” I ask, looking at either of them.

Snowden is the one who clears his throat. “Yeah, you go past the kitchen, and it’s the first door on the left.”

“Thanks,” I tell him as I get up and manage to act like everything is fine. Internally, I’m lying to myself. I know I’m not okay. It’s obvious with the way my heart’s still pounding in my head. My pulse is so strong I feel as though I might never calm down again, but as I reach the bathroom door and turn the knob, cool air hits me. Lord, they need to keep this door open. It’s too damn cold, like the artic in here. Sure enough, I flip the light on and shut the door behind me, but just as I shut the door, a German shepherd comes rushing in.

Its hair is long, a mixture of bronze and black, and its eyes have a copper glow to them. A beautiful dog, that’s for sure. There’s a bit of white on its muzzle, meaning it’s probably a few years old or so. I bend down and pet the dog, and he wags his tail forcefully. He pants a bit, and I rise, head over to the sink, and turn on the water.

All I want is to shock myself a little bit. I know when other people have panic attacks, they’ll throw cold water on their face as a way to ‘wake’ themselves up in a sense. So, I’m going to try and see if it’ll work. I form my hands into a sort of bowl and splash the cool water against my face. After the first time, I’m not sure if it’s working, so I do it again. I end up splashing the water on my face a few times until I feel like I can finally breathe again. Slowly but surely, my nervousness begins to disappear.

Nails hitting against the hardwood floor behind me make me turn to see what’s going on. The dog is jumping around like a lunatic, causing me to laugh, and I go down on my knees. The dog jumps around a bit more. I continue to laugh, but before I know it, tears are spilling from my eyes. Shortly, my tears turn into sobs, and the dog comes right up to me.
